July 14, 2019

Surrey, B.C. – The World Baseball and Softball Confederation (WSBC) has released its schedule for the Softball Americas Softball Qualification Event for the Games of the XXXII Olympiad Tokyo 2020. The tournament takes place at Softball City in Surrey, B.C. from August 25th to September 1st.

Team Canada, the highest ranked team in the tournament, will open against team Cuba at 7:30pm on the main diamond (Field 1) and play all its subsequent round robin games in primetime at 6:00pm. The games will also be streamed live online on CBC’s website.

“This is a very exciting time for Canadian softball and softball in general” said Greg Timm, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee. “We are so pleased that our national team will have opportunity to chase their Olympic dreams on home soil, in front of friends and family – and softball supporters from across the country.”

The Canadians will be looking to clinch one of two available berths for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, with women’s and men’s softball making its first appearance as an Olympic sport since 2008.

Canada’s roster is chalk-full of former and current NCAA Division 1 athletes, as well as stars of the professional National Pro Fastpitch league in the US, not to mention former Olympians like Langley-born and raised Danielle Lawrie.

“Putting on a jersey with Canada on the front is an experience that I’ve had the chance to live a few times in my career and it never gets old,” said Lawrie, a stand-out during her college career with the University of Washington Huskies, where she holds the school records for wins, shutouts and strikeouts. “There’s no greater honour than playing for your country, and the qualifier is going to be pivotal in fulfilling that dream.”

In total, 12 teams from North, Central and South America will participate in the tournament including Puerto Rico, Mexico and Venezuela, ranked 4th, 5th and 16th in the world, respectively. The participants were drawn into two groups:

Group A: No. 3 Canada (3), No. 4 Puerto Rico, No. 39 Bahamas, No. 17 Cuba, No. 18 Guatemala, No. 25 Argentina.

Group B: No. 5 Mexico, No. 16 Venezuela, No. 14 Brazil, No. 20 Peru, No. 57 British Virgin Islands, No. 19 Dominican Republic.

The round robin will be played from August 25th to 29th. The top three National Teams in each group will advance to a Super Round (30 August to 1 September). The top two National Teams in the tournament final standings will gain a berth for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
