Surrey, BC – Coming off a Silver Medal performance at the Pan Am Games, the Canadian Women’s National Softball Team now has its sights set squarely on the WBSC Softball Americas Qualifier and the opportunity to gain a berth in the Tokyo Games of 2020.

WBSC Softball Americas Qualifier for the Games of the XXXII Olympiad Tokyo 2020 will start in less than two weeks – at Softball City in Surrey, B.C. from August 25th to September 1st.

Team Canada, the highest ranked team in the tournament, will open against Cuba at 7:30pm on opening day and will be looking to clinch one of two available berths for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

“The stakes don’t get any bigger than this,” said Organizing Chair Greg Timm. “The top national teams in the Americas will be competing for two berths in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. And what better way for the top ranked Canadian National Team to chase their dream, than by competing on home soil, at Softball City in Surrey.”

For Canada’s national team, it will be very much a home-coming, as seven of the 15 roster positions are occupied by British Columbians – while the other members of the team have a long-term affinity with this ball park and its passionate fans.

Eleven teams from North, Central, and South America will participate in the tournament including Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Venezuela, ranked 4th, 5th, and 16th in the world, respectively.

Canada’s Opening Robin Schedule:
Sunday, August 25th, 7:30pm: Canada (3) vs Cuba (17)
Monday, August 26th, 6:00pm: Canada (3) vs Argentina (25)
Tuesday, August 27th, 6:00pm: Canada (3) vs Guatemala (18)
Wednesday, August 28th, 6:00pm: Canada (3) vs Puerto Rico (4)
Thursday, August 29th, 6:00pm: Canada (3) vs Bahamas (39)

The round robin will be played from August 25-29. The top three National Teams in each group will advance to a Super Round (30 August to 1 September). The top two National Teams in the tournament final standings will gain a berth for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
