Pomp and Ceremony Greets Spectators on Night
Players, coaches softball officials and funding partners from the local, provincial and federal government took to the field for the official opening night ceremony to mark the start of the Softball Americas Qualifier at Softball City.
World Baseball and Softball Confederation President Riccardo Fraccari thanked the Organizing Committee and volunteers who are making this week possible.
Bats Come Alive for Canada in Opener at Softball Americas Qualifier
Canada’s national women’s softball team began its push for a berth in the 2020 Olympic Summer Games in Tokyo in fine style during day-one action at the Softball Americas Qualifier.
Canada’s bats came alive with a 15 run second inning enroute to a, 17-0 final over Cuba that was called in the third inning.
Coach Mark Smith says the squad hopes to improve with each effort. “We obviously hit the ball well tonight, but we know the games are going to get tougher. We take nobody for granted and we hope to get better with each and every game.”
Next up for Canada at the Olympic Qualifier is Team Guatemala, Tuesday evening at 6 pm.
Other day one results included Mexico opening with an 8-0, five-inning victory over Peru; Venezuela recovered from a 3-1 deficit and defeated the Dominican Republic 7-3, and Guatemala beat the Bahamas 9-4.
